Israel’s oldest daily newspaper Haaretz was founded in 1918. Currently, this newspaper has been published in Hebrew and English . Not only this, these editions are also available on internet. It does also publish as a weekly newspaper in North America. This weekly newspaper also contains articles from Friday.
Haaretz is different from the other newspapers in Israel because it uses smaller headlines and also less space for pictures. More space is given to political analysis, for the articles on social issues and for book reviews. Their daily sale is more than 72,000 copies and on weekends its increase up to 100,000 copies. Last year Haaretz’s readership decreased and fell from 7.4 to 6.6 percent.
According to report it’s the most influential daily newspaper of Israel. Newspaper’s former U.S. correspondent Shmuel Rosner told that,
“People who read it are better educated and more sophisticated than most, but the rest of the country doesn’t know it exists.”
First time this newspaper was published in 1918 and that time it was sponsored by British military government in Palestine. Russian Zionists took the charge in 1919. In the first year of its publication it was called Hadshot Ha’aretz but later it was called “Ha’aretz”. Haaretz was published in Jerusalem but it was moved to Tel Aviv on December 31, 1922.
In 1937, this newspaper was bought by Salman Schocken. The wealthy German Jewish Zionist Salman Schocken owned a chain of department stores in Germany. His son became the chief editor of the newspaper and served as a chief editor till his death.
