Andrew Koppel, son of former ABC anchor Ted Koppel, has died at the age of 40 on Monday May 31, 2010. Andrew Koppel was an attorney for the city Housing Authority. Andrew was found dead in an apartment in Washington Heights which belongs to Belinda Caban. Andrew had been drinking for hours with a waiter whom he met at the Hell’s Kitchen bar. Russell Wimberly, a 32-year-old waiter, shares the apartment with 53-year-old Belinda Caban. Andrew drank whiskey and both of them didn’t eat anything at all in that period. Russell and Andrew return to the Washington Heights apartment around 11 p.m. after a daylong drinking binge. Wimberly and Caban asked him to get some sleep and after two hours they found him unconscious.
Wimberly and Caban called 911 after they discovered he was not breathing. Andrew was pronounced dead at around 1:30 a.m. Monday and the exact cause of his death has not yet been determined. Caban told New York Post,
“(He was) was just really messed up when he came in. He was very drunk. We took him to the bedroom and laid him down to rest. His complexion wasn’t right. It was pale. I said to call the police. When the ambulance came, they said he was dead.”
Ted Koppel is married to Grace Anne and he is best known for his work as the anchor of ABC’s “Nightline.” Andrew Koppel had three sisters named Andrea, Deirdre and Tara.
